Thanksgiving Special: Culinary Rituals and Traditions

Thursday, November 27, 2014

As part of WDET's special Thanksgiving Day programming, we have two hour-long specials that investigate the culinary culture of Thanksgiving and how vastly different communities can come together through food. Plus, we travel around the country with State of The re:Union host Al Letson, and take a look at the people, climate, history and challenges of several very different American cities.

Our first food-related program is a special Thanksgiving edition of America’s Test Kitchen. We hear from Butterball’s turkey experts, put roasting pans through their paces with gadget guru Lisa McManus, and catch up with wine expert Stephen Meuse. Plus, we head into the test kitchen to learn how to make the perfect sweet potato pie.

The second is The Kitchen Sisters' “Hidden Kitchens World.” We hear how vastly different communities come together through food in this evocative hour, packed full of little-known kitchen rituals and traditions. From Mafia wine in Sicily to Dissident Kitchens in Russia, stories about culinary culture from around the world.
