It almost didn’t happen this year. The horror! No, for real. The DIY / Funky Ferndale weekend is an unofficial holiday in southeast Michigan, marking the moment why hooded sweatshirts and Oktoberfest-style brew start making the way onto and into our bodies. Two separate events, yes, however both offer a weekend’s worth of cultural opportunity for a price you can’t beat. The lineup of bands playing DIY this year proves that when it comes to local talent, we thankfully never have to compromise quantity for quality. Ian Link, Hard Lessons, Oak Bones, Doc Waffles, Little Animal -- We see you!



License to Drive @ Paxahau’s 16th Birthday

Producing some of the best dance parties Detroit’s ever seen, Paxahau takes the keys to the car and puts the internationally acclaimed musician (and Ghostly International co-founder) Matthew Dear in the driver’s seat. Detroit duo Ataxia share the bill with tech-house producer Gabi.

Touring their eighth record in ten years, indie rock stalwarts Spoon hit Royal Oak for a set of classic cuts and new jams. Worth getting there early for opener Hamilton Leithauser who has been winning hearts since his NPR Tiny Desk concert in July.





Aesthetically Bound @ Detroit Art Book Fair

If we clean in the spring, perhaps fall is time to accumulate. Ok, not brown corduroy weather JUST yet, but still, consider picking up some books to feed your eyes and brain at the second-annual Detroit Art Book fair, which hits Trinosophes in Eastern Market this weekend. Work from artists, zines, and publishing houses from Detroit and around the world including local publishing house and book shop Ditto Ditto, the producing partner of this event.

Food as fresh as it gets: Join noted local chefs, such as Nick Janutol of the Forest Grill and Aaron Cozadd of the Union Joints (Union Woodshop, Clarkston Union, Vinsetta Garage & Fenton Fire Hall) for this special fundraiser for the Upland Hills Farm, which Knight and Dorothy Webster founded in 1960 as a natural environment that fosters creativity, self-understanding, life-long friendships and empathy for other living beings.. Also on the menu are live music, pony-rides and hay-rides, and a workshop on milking cows. That’s what’s up!
