Friday, September 5, 2014

This week in Culture City, the 37th annual ‘Dally in the Alley’ Festival raises the creative spirit of the Cass Corridor, a multinational audio event called ‘Poetry In Places’ brings radio into the dark, and we meet the other Detroit musician who made it big in South Africa: Marissa Guzman.

Check out the individual interviews here:

Smitten Audio In The Dark: Hear Creative Radio in Communal Space

A live radio event that takes place around Europe called "In The Dark" is collaborating with metro Detroit's "Smitten Mitten Audio Collective" to present an evening of radio stories from around the world. Travis spoke with Katherina Smets, a radio producer from Belgium who teaches radio at the Royal Conservatory in Antwerp and Zack Rosen, a freelance radio producer and writer based in Detroit.

Life Beats: Marissa Guzman's 'House' and Home in South Africa

Marissa Guzman gave up a career in the advertising industry to pursue dreams of making music. That path brought Guzman from her native Detroit to San Francisco and then on to South Africa, where she found success as a recording artist in the electronic music sub- genre called “House” after collaborating with producer Black Coffee. When Guzman spoke with WDET’s Travis Wright before leaving for Cape Town, she told him how her father’s career as a Motown recording artist inspired the decision to leave the corporate world behind and make music full-time.

…I Do My Other Thing (ZMix) by The Anonymous feat. Passalacqua

The list of bands playing the 37th annual Dally in the Alley are as wild and original as the soiree itself. When The Anonymous takes the stage, it’s a safe bet the set will end with this super-catchy hip-hop song, so give it a few spins, learn the chorus, then come down to Dally and party with us … after you do that other thing.
