Thousands of Detroit Residents Face Water Shutoffs: Is Water a Human Right?

Monday, June 2, 2014

National Chairperson of the Council of Canadians, Best-selling Canadian author and human rights activist, Maude Barlow, speaks with Craig Fahle about the thousands Detroit residents experiencing water shut-offs due to a new policy at Detroit Water and Sewerage Department. Barlow stresses in her blog about how this will penalize those with low income, the elderly, primarily African Americans, and that two-thirds of the cut-offs involve children. "The shutoffs are already taking place, since the end of March, without warning", says Barlow. Barlow indicates that water is a basic human right and the possibility that Detroit could soon be fighting privatization of its water.
