The History Of Live Black Music In Detroit

Monday, June 30, 2014

Photo courtesy of onthisdaydetroit.com WDET's own Jay Butler and political consultant and author of “On This Day: African American Life in Detroit” Ken Coleman, both join Craig for a conversation about the history of black music in Detroit. Their discussion goes along with WDET's series for Black Music Month, where we take a look at some of Detroit's most significant figures and historic sites for black music. Jay and Ken touch on a few of these locations, including Phelps Lounge --a favorite of James Brown and The Temptations; Blue Bird Inn, where iconic jazz musicians Miles Davis and John Coltrane performed and Detroit's first African-American owned-and-operated radio station Bell Broadcasting.
