Jazz Pianist Scott Gwinell talks with Craig about the youth Jazz workshop he is putting on in Grosse Pointe Woods.

4th ANNUAL METRO-DETROIT JAZZ WORKSHOP (MDJW) Weeklong Jazz Workshop for All Ages, Instruments, and Experience Levels

The 4th Annual, Metro-Detroit Jazz Workshop is a clinic/performance opportunity for students of all ages, instruments including voice, and experience levels. The workshop is between 10am and 5pm from Monday, July 9th to Friday, July 13th at First English Lutheran Church in Grosse Pointe Woods, Michigan.

Instructed by an award-winning faculty of the best teachers and musicians, students are offered jazz theory, jazz improvisation, and jazz composition. Clinics are given by faculty and three guest jazz masters: Trumpeter, Walter White, vocalist April Tini, and bassist Miles Brown.

Besides classes and clinics, there is a combo rehearsal with fellow students and faculty coach. Combos and faculty perform together on Sunday July 15th at Cliff Bells Jazz Club in Detroit, MI for family and friends.

Other college and high school jazz camps concentrate on placing with larger bands and reading music, but the MDJW focuses on small group improvisation. There is great individual attention with a faculty to student ratio of 4 to 1. Students are educated both in the music and about their instrument, and will also have a fun week of playing music and appreciating America’s own music / art form, Jazz.

Applications can be downloaded from the website. Other information is available including photos from last year’s workshop.
