Photo courtesy of When it comes to prison policy, "every time we take a step forward, we take two steps back," says Detroit Free Press reporter Brian Dickerson. He credits most of this to highly publicized crimes, like the recent prison break Feb. 3.

Dickerson wrote a piece on the decline of prison populations, noting that crime has not increased in conjunction with the trend. He is in studio to discuss Michigan's prison policies.

According to Dickerson's article, the prison population in Michigan grew at a rate 29 times that of the general population between 1980 and 2010.

He says in the state, we hold prisoners much longer than almost every other state and are "behind the curve" in prisoner re-entry programs.
