Tuesday, May 20, 2013

The history of Detroit's underground techno movement lives in local DJs, producers and record labels. Craig talks with DJ and Detroit Techno historian Brendan Gillen and Detroit Techno Foundation Executive Director Tom Newman about how local artists shaped today's music.

Brendan Gillen is a DJ and producer who’s writing a book on Detroit’s techno history. He also founded the record label Interdimensional Transmissions.

Tom Newman is the Executive Director of Detroit Techno Foundation, and is also a Detroit DJ and music producer.

Gillen and Newman join Detroit techno pioneer Juan Atkins and DJ Dan Bell at “Detroit Techno: Music that Influenced the World”, an event that takes place at the University of Michigan Detroit Center on Tuesday, May 21 (6pm-8pm) to kick off Movement’s “Techno Week”.
