First Day of Spring: Greening of Detroit Launches Planting Season

Wednesday, March 20, 2013

Today is the first day of spring, whether the Michigan weather acknowledges it or not, and that means planting season is here. Craig talks trees and green infrastructure with Greening of Detroit President Rebecca Salminen Witt and Detroit Future City Design Principal Dan Kinkead.

Greening of Detroit is aligning their planting efforts with the Detroit Future City Framework's guidelines for building the city's green infrastructure. Greening plans to plant almost 2,500 trees this spring. Many plantings are in partnership with the Detroit Water and Sewerage department to mitigate stormwater runoff and reduce flooding in targeted neighborhoods.

Due to cold weather and frozen ground, the kick-off date for spring tree planting is rescheduled for April 6.

Dan Kinkead is Design Principal pf Hamilton Anderson Associates and Technical Planning Consultant with Detroit Future City.

Rebecca Salminen Witt is President of The Greening of Detroit, who also participated on the process leadership team for the Detroit Works Project.
