Rebuilding Detroit Could Include Eco Tourism, New Bird Observation Area

As Detroit and surrounding communities work together to reimagine the area, conservationists and recreation enthusiasts are looking at Detroit’s strategic location next to the Detroit River and between Lake Saint Clair and Lake Erie for reconnecting residents and visitors with wildlife and waterfowl and in particular. WDET’s Amy Miller spoke with John Hartig, Manager for the Detroit International Wildlife Refuge about plans for a new observation area at Gabriel Richard Park and how the city can capitalize on eco-tourism. Hartig says wildlife managers are noticing the harsh winter impacts on birds.
