Northern Michigan's Influence on the Work of Ernest Hemingway

Monday, July 21, 2014

Today is Ernest Hemingway’s birthday. A collection of Ernest Hemingway’s short stories that take place in Northern Michigan feature a recurring character named Nick Adams. The collection -- The Nick Adams Stories -- was published in 1972, a decade after Hemingway died.

The Nick Adams Stories is one of the selections for WDET’s Summer Book Club. Laura Weber-Davis spoke with Michael Federspiel, a history professor at Central Michigan University, executive director of the Little Traverse History Museum, and an expert on Hemingway. Federspiel says Hemingway’s time in Michigan was not spent as the intense brawler.
