Tony Hawk Foundation Grants $30K to Detroit Skate Park

Ride It Sculpture Park

The world’s most famous skateboarder is supporting a unique skate park in Detroit. The Ride It Sculpture Park, a non-profit and community-based skate-boarding project, is receiving a $30-thousand dollar grant from the Tony Hawk Foundation.

Pete Whitley is the foundation’s programs director. He says Ride It is unlike any skate park he’s ever seen. He tells WDET’s Travis Wright how Tony Hawk went from kink flips to philanthropy.

And what about speculation regarding a potential Tony Hawk skate park to be constructed in front of the Grand Central Station in Corktown? Though the idea, he says, sounds exciting, Whitley confirms that there are absolutely no such plans.
