BREAKING: Tigers Clinch AL Central

The Detroit Tigers have won the American League Central Division title by beating the Oakland A's 3-1 Friday night. Doug Fister, who was acquired in a trade with the Seattle Mariners in July, earned the victory, giving up just one run in eight innings. Jose Valverde picked up his 45th save of the season as the Tigers became the first AL team to qualify for the 2011 Major League Baseball playoffs. This is the team's first division title since 1987, when they won the AL East on the final day of the regular season. It's also Detroit's first playoff trip since 2006, when they qualified as a wild card and went to the World Series.
