The effort to build a statue memorializing a science fiction character with ties to Detroit is one step closer to reality. WDET’s Rob St. Mary reports.

“We get the best of both worlds – the fastest reflexes modern technology has to offer, on-board computer assisted memory and a lifetime of on the street law enforcement programming – it is my great pleasure to present to you – Robocop.”

Just under two weeks ago, a guy in Massachusetts tweeted Detroit Mayor Dave Bing. He asked Bing to consider building a statue of Robocop. Bing replied that there were no such plans. But the idea quickly started to grow on-line. Facebook pages fanned the flames and a few days later a kickstarter fundraiser page was created seeking $50,000. Now, less than a week later the goal has been met. While the average donation was about $17, half of the money came from a businessman in California.

Jerry Paffendorf is one of the coordinators of the fundraising effort. He says he understands that some Metro Detroiters don’t like the idea. But, he says the character’s concept is really about rebirth.

“There is a deeper metaphor in Robocop’s character as a good guy doing his job in a hard environment who gets violated and recreated and never loses his humanity and comes back maybe even better than before.”

Paffendorf says the Robocop statue should be placed in Corktown later this year.
