Rashida Tlaib is a staple of Michigan’s political scene. In 2008 she was first Muslim woman to be elected to Michigan’s State Legislator. After three terms in the house of representatives, national accolades as a female elected official and a failed bid to win a state senate seat against incumbent Virgil Smith in August 2014.
