McLaren Building Proton Therapy Center

Doctors can use proton radiation to kill cancer cells…but for most patients in Metro Detroit, the nearest proton treatment center is in suburban Chicago…over 300 miles away. That’s about to change. Last year, McLaren Health Care in Flint started building its own proton therapy center, and officials say they expect to start treating patients by the end of next year. The lead consultant on the project is Dr. Alfred Smith, Ph. D. Dr. Smith says the technology is similar to X-rays, but is more accurate, and less invasive. He talked about it with WDET's Pat Batcheller. Click the audio link above to hear the interview.
