Folkist Matt Jones Goes into the Deep: New Ballads from the Civil War

October 3, 2014

By Travis Wright

On Deep Enders, Matt Jones delicately throws seeds of Appalachian, Celtic and other ol'- timey music into his own folk dirt.

The soil is rich. He admits his playing is less flashy than previous efforts, and a sense of patient exploration does permeates throughout the album.

The songs are a compendium of tunes that the songwriter says purposefully sway away from his personal history in favor of other people's drama. To seek inspiration this time, he traded in self-obsession for the dubious fates of those who lived in America -- North and South -- during the Civil War.

In anticipation of the 'Deep Enders' record release show Friday, October 3, 2014 at The Ark in Ann Arbor with Matt Jones & the Reconstruction, with special guest opener Josh Malerman -- author and front-man of The High Strung -- Culture City host Travis Wright produced this audio postcard.
