"I knew I wanted to use music as a platform to help people."

Marissa Guzman gave up a career in the advertising industry to pursue dreams of making music. That path brought Guzman from her native Detroit to San Francisco and then on to South Africa, where she found success as a recording artist in the electronic music sub- genre called “House” after collaborating with producer Black Coffee.

When Guzman spoke with WDET’s Travis Wright before leaving for Cape Town, she told him how her father’s career as a Motown recording artist inspired the decision to leave the corporate world behind and make music full-time.
