Jazz Fest 2013: Ralphe Armstrong's Low End Theory

Ralphe Armstrong

Stretching from Campus Martius Park to Hart Plaza the 34th Detroit Jazz Festival features some of the best in the genre today.

After checking out the lineup, WDET’s Travis Wright started thinking about Detroit’s lineage of bass guitarists, so he invited one of the city’s living legends in to hash it out.

Detroit native Ralphe Armstrong has played with Herbie Hancock, the Funk Brothers, the Cars, Santana, and John McLaughlin's Mahavishnu Orchestra. He continues to help foster Detroit's young lions of jazz.

On Monday (Sept. 2), he’s playing with Miles Smiles, a tribute to Miles Davis, whom he played with in the late '70s.

Armstrong brought a band when he dropped by WDET’s studios when he dropped by to talk bass guitar, his new record, and, of course, the Detroit Jazz festival.
