Portrait of Gilda Snowden by Craig Paul Nowak

Gilda Snowden was a Detroiter through and through. From Cass Tech High School to Wayne State University, where she completed her graduate and undergraduate degrees in art and painting, Snowden was a fixture and torch bearer of the Cass Corridor art scene.

She was Interim Chair and a long-time professor of Fine Arts at the College for Creative Studies, and her art -- abstract tornadoes of color and paint -- have been exhibited throughout the United States, as well as in Mexico, Canada and West Africa. You can also find her work at The Detroit Institute of Arts. She was named a Kresge Arts in Detroit Fellow in 2009.

Gilda Snowden died unexpectedly due to heart failure. She leaves behind her husband, her daughter and countless friends, supporters, former students and admirers. She was 60.
