Detroit Is One Big Improv

Detroit has a history of improv comedy that dates back decades. It manufactures funny people: Saturday Night Live icon Gilda Radner, Robin Williams, Sinbad, Lily Tomlin, Keegan-Michael Peele, Tim Allen, and recent SNL addition Tim Robinson to name a few.

For more than a decade, the Detroit location acted as a farm system for Chicago's iconic Second City improv theater. Hamtramck’s Planet Ant and Ferndale’s Go! Comedy improv theaters continue to foster the local scene.

For the next several days, thousands of improv fans will come to Ferndale to take in performances and workshops during the third annual Detroit Improv Festival. Some of the top talent in the country will be on hand, including Chicago duo TJ & Dave.

Comic PJ Jacokes owns Go! Comedy and helps produce the festival. He tells WDET’s Travis Wright that Detroiters know about improv than they might think.

Partial proceeds from the festival will go to benefit the cancer support organization, Gilda's Club.
