Detroit Fishing Derby Teaches Life-Long Lessons

Friday, May 18, 2012

Hundreds of kids are expected in Detroit’s Palmer Park Saturday to learn about fishing. The 16th Annual Detroit Fishing Derby gives kids exposure to a sport not commonly shown to urban kids. Gary Williams started the event back in 1996. He tells WDET’s Jerome Vaughn the idea for the event came to him after a near-death experience.

…to the great outdoors.

That was project founder Gary Williams…speaking to WDET’s Jerome Vaughn. Registration for the 16th annual Detroit Fishing Derby gets underway at 9 a.m. Saturday. Kids should bring their own fishing equipment and live bait to Lake Frances – in Palmer Park.

Interested volunteers can get more information by calling Gary Williams at (313) 917-7084 or the Detroit Recreation Department at (313) 224-1129.
