"It goes back to Detroit's place in the creative scene. It's a global creative center, and let's create that global destination for anyone around the world to come and experience this scene."

Detroit art and design is literally in the spotlight next week. Hundreds of lights, potentially. And the world is watching.

Two of the city's largest art and design showcases --- a two-day event dubbed Dlectricity that's back since its first iteration in 2012, and the annual week-long onslaught of design known starkly as The Detroit Design Festival --- will be produced at the same time this year.

Each event brings in tens of thousand from around the region and across the world.

Centered in Midtown, the sheer quantity and quality of exhibitions and installations across the entire city marks a monumental moment for the regional art scene.

Matt Clayson is the executive director of the Detroit Design Festival. Marc Schwartz is the chair of Delectricity.

They spoke with WDET's Travis Wright about the roots of the collaborative effort.
