A New Idea To Make College Affordable

March 5, 2013

Could a higher sales tax help make college more affordable for Michigan students? State Representative Vicki Barnett thinks it could. This month, she plans to introduce the Michigan College Trust Program, which would help qualified students pay most, if not all, of their tuition at any not-for-profit college or university in the state. Voters would have to approve Barnett’s idea first because it would raise the state sales tax from six percent to seven. The Farmington Hills Democrat tells WDET’s Pat Batcheller that her idea isn’t just to make college less expensive…but to transform Michigan’s economy. She says if the Legislature doesn’t put the Michigan College Trust Program on the ballot, there will be a petition drive. Click on the audio link above to hear the conversation.
