Bing's Budget May Mean Cuts To Offset Pension Costs

Rising pension costs for active and retired Detroit City workers could eat up a third of the 2014 budget. Mayor Dave Bing presents his proposed budget to City Council Friday. It reportedly calls for cuts in services to offset the pension obligations. Emergency Financial Manager Kevyn Orr will have the final word on spending. He can accept, reject, or modify any contract offered by the mayor or city council. WDET's Pat Batcheller asked City Council member James Tate whether having an emergency financial manager makes budgeting a waste of time for the mayor or the council.
