Group Seeks to Bridge Historic Divide

April 27, 2010

WDET’s “Crossing the Lines” series is an ongoing look at the things that unite us and divide us as a region, and the people who are trying to change the way we see ourselves and each other. A group called “Bridging 8 Mile” has a similar purpose. Its vision is to make Detroit the best place to be a child. Its community meetings allow people to put aside old fears and prejudices and really get to know each other. There are two such meetings this weekend. WDET’s Pat Batcheller spoke with chairman David Abramson, who says the region can’t thrive economically as long as 8 Mile is a line in the sand, rather than a line on a map. Bridging8Mile has two reimagining community meetings this weekend. The first will be held at the Ravendale Community Center on Harper in Detroit on Saturday. The second will take place at the Royal Oak Senior Community Center on Marais on Sunday. Both sessions run from 9am until 5pm.
