Verlander Wins Cy Young

The Detroit Tigers pitcher Justin Verlander has won the American League’s prestigious Cy Young Award. The selection is not surprising. The Baseball Writers Association of America unanimously gave Verlander all 28 first place votes for the award anointing him as the American League’s best pitcher. And there’s a good reason why. Verlander won the AL’s pitching Triple Crown this year with the league’s best won loss record, earned run average and he struck out the most batters. He pitched a no-hitter and helped the Tigers to the League Championship Series. The only question remaining for the 28-year-old Verlander is whether he can become the first pitcher since Roger Clemens in 1986 to be named the league’s Most Valuable Player.
