Porch Shooter Sentenced To At Least 17 Years

September 3, 2014

A Dearborn Heights man has been sentenced to at least 17 years in prison for shooting an unarmed teenager on his front porch. The case gained national attention from civil rights advocates…who believed the shooting could be racially motivated. Last November, in the early morning hours, 19-year-old Renisha McBride stood on the front porch of 55-year-old Theodore Wafer’s home knocking on his door. Wafer claimed he feared his life was in danger. He grabbed a shotgun and fired through the screen door, killing McBride. He was convicted of second-degree murder among other charges. For some the shooting echoed that of Florida teenager Trayvon Martin because Wafer is white and McBride was black and unarmed. But prosecutors say they do NOT believe race played any role in the killing. Wafer was sentenced to between 17 and 30 years behind bars.
