Southern California native Joel Miller is the winner of the second annual Detroit Moth Grand Slam competition. Last night’s event at the Gem Theatre featured ten storytellers recounting a “point of no return” story. The competitors were the winners of the monthly Detroit Moth Story Slams.

Miller’s story was about of how he decided to become a doctor after a medical mission to Peru put him face-to-face with a native woman with extreme arthritis in need of help. Miller says the key to the Moth is just telling a real, compelling story.

“Just a good story. I can’t tell you anything more. I had a story that I had a lot of feeling behind and a lot of emotions and I put that emotion up on stage.”

Miller will represent Detroit at the national Moth Grand Slam in New York City later this year. The next monthly Moth Story Slam will be held October 6th at Cliff Bells in Detroit.

On the personal level, Miller will graduate from Wayne State University Medical School next year.
