Detroit Unions Say They Still Have Leverage To Bargain

Detroit Emergency Manager Kevyn Orr is notifying two of the city’s largest unions that their contracts will be terminated once the current agreements expire next week. Spokespeople for the emergency manager say the notification is routine and no immediate changes are planned for the union workers’ wages or benefits. But an official representing one of those unions is not so sure. Ed McNeil is the lead negotiator for AFSCME Council 25, which represents the largest number of city workers of any union in Detroit. McNeil tells WDET’s Quinn Klinefelter the union has little to go on where Detroit’s emergency manager is concerned…
