The Chase Bank Foundation is offering a $1 million grant for down payment assistance to police officers and city employees. Mayor Dave Bing says this will expand his earlier effort called “Project 14” which offers assistance to police to move into targeted neighborhoods.

“We have over 275 inquiries from our police officers relative to coming back to the City of Detroit. So, that’s going to be tremendous we can start to hit some of those numbers.”

Bing says the goal is to assist about 70 city employees in purchasing vacant homes in the “Project 14” neighborhoods and the “Detroit Works” demonstration areas. Those neighborhoods include Boston Edison, North End, Virginia Park, Southwest, Hubbard Farms, Palmer Woods, Sherwood Forest, University District, East English Village, North Rosedale Park and Green Acres.

Chase officials say the grant will fund the down payment assistance project over the next two years.
