Fight Brews Over Beer Logos in Bars

November 11, 2013

"In 49 other states, you can have logoed barware. We are literally the only state that doesn't allow it."

Brian DeBano, President of the Michigan Restaurant Association.

A fight is brewing between Michigan restaurants and alcohol distributors over the use of logos. The state has a policy dating back to Prohibition, banning beer and liquor brand logos on glasses, coasters, and other things that have a purpose other than advertising in bars and restaurants. Last week, the State Senate voted to make the policy a law. It also voted to require bars and restaurants to buy glassware from third parties that have no ties to the alcohol industry. The Senate’s action angered the Michigan Restaurant Association. President Brian DeBano called the legislation an attack on free markets and free speech.
