Chronic Absenteeism Plagues Detroit Public Schools

This week marked the beginning of the school year for Detroit students. But a new study shows the city has some of the highest rates of absenteeism in the country, with about 30-percent of fourth graders missing school frequently. Hedy Chang is the Director of Attendance Works, the group which compiled the study. She tells WDET’s J. Carlisle Larsen about some key factors which contribute to chronic absenteeism in cities like Detroit.
