U.S. Auto Sales Rise In August

Wednesday, September 3, 2014

Most U-S automakers are reporting improved sales for the month of August.

Strong demand for light trucks and lower gas prices helped move vehicle sales higher last month.

Chrysler posted its best August in a dozen years with sales jumping 20%, pushed by consumers buying Jeep brand vehicles.

Nissan sales rose nearly 12%. Toyota sales were up 6%.

Ford and General Motors beat industry analysts’ expectations, despite little or no sales growth compared to a year ago. Ford sales rose less than 1% percent. GM sales fell 1.2%.

Despite GM’s lower overall numbers, the Detroit automaker’s truck sales rose 18%.

Three of the top five selling vehicles in the U-S last month were pickup trucks.
