Packard Plant Sale Could Happen Soon

August 23, 2013

A Chicago-area developer is planning to buy Detroit’s abandoned Packard Plant from Wayne County, which could put the crumbling landmark on the auction block if the purchase falls through. The deal is expected to close before the end of the month. The developer’s plans make one think about the possibilities for the Packard Plant, one of the most-photographed ruins in the city. Dan Pitera is the head of the Detroit Collaborative Design Center at the University of Detroit-Mercy. WDET's Pat Batcheller asked Pitera if the plant is too far gone to save, and if not, how expensive it would be to make it usable again. Click on the audio link above to hear the conversation.
