DPD Chief Craig Holds Patrol Roll Calls In Public

Monday, August 19, 2013

Detroit residents have long complained about not seeing police officers in their neighborhoods. The department took steps to change that this weekend.

Police Chief James Craig held Saturday evening’s role call for officers patrolling the Sixth and Eight Precincts -- in a parking lot on the city’s west side. More than 30 officers and a dozen squad cars gathered near Fenkell and the Southfield Freeway to meet with Craig. Earlier in the day…the DPD held a similar event on the east side.

Chief Craig took the unusual move to boost the visibility of the police force in the neighborhoods. He also took the opportunity to shake hands and introduce himself to the officers before they began their patrols.

WDET’s Jerome Vaughn attended the event – and afterwards – asked Craig why he came up with the idea.
