Election Guide: Allen Park Financial Crisis Poses Tough Choice For Voters

July 31, 2013

"I would reduce the number of firefighters from 22 to eight full-time firefighters. The Police Department would lose an additional eight officers [if the millage fails]."

Joyce Parker, Allen Park Emergency Manager.

Allen Park voters will decide next Tuesday whether to pay higher property taxes to maintain police and fire services over the next 10 years. The city is asking for up to 6.75 mills, which would raise almost $5 million dollars this year. It would replace a three-and-a-half mill levy that was approved a few years ago. WDET’s Pat Batcheller asked Allen Park Emergency Manager Joyce Parker why voters are being asked for more money now. Click on the audio link above to hear the conversation.
