Nelson Mandela turned 95 last week, and the world celebrated as he recovers from a stubborn illness. Detroit’s Fellowship Chapel honors the former South African president’s life Wednesday night. Its pastor is the Reverend Wendell Anthony, who is also the president of the Detroit Branch of the NAACP. Dr. Anthony helped organize Mandela’s visit to Tiger Stadium in 1990. Before that, he went with a group of other civil rights leaders to see Mandela at his home in South Africa--but it didn’t go quite as he expected.
