New App Shows Where There's Free Or Low-Cost Health Care

"We went around to different clinics and so forth that do offer free or low-cost care and found that most of the people sitting in the waiting rooms actually had smart phones in their hands and were using them while they were waiting."

Kate Kohn-Parrott, President of the Greater Detroit Area Health Council.

The Greater Detroit Area Health Council says too many people use emergency rooms when they don’t need to. The group says only 25 percent of all ER visits in Detroit in 2010 were considered actual emergencies, and the rest could have been handled at free or low-cost clinics. To help people find those clinics, the Council has launched a web site and a phone app. Council President Kate Kohn-Parrott tells WDET’s Pat Batcheller both will show people where to go based on the kind of care they need.
