Violence Gave Birth To Youth Day

"The whole idea of Youth Day is to inspire our youth to do the most good."

Ed Deeb, founder of Metro Detroit Youth Day.

Organizers of this year’s Metro Detroit Youth Day say they expect more than 30-thousand children to gather Wednesday on Belle Isle for a day of fun and games. The annual event began more than 30 years ago as a response to deadly confrontations between young people and Detroit store owners in the summer of 1980. Youth Day Founder Ed Deeb tells WDET’s Pat Batcheller that violence led to a meeting with then-Mayor Coleman Young. Click on the audio link above to hear the conversation.
