Organizers Plan 50th Anniversary Of King March In Detroit

Monday, June 17, 2013

This weekend marks a key anniversary in Detroit history. On June 23, 1963, Doctor Martin Luther King, Junior led a march down Woodward Avenue. More than 100,000 people joined King on the walk, before watching him give a speech at Cobo Arena. Those remarks contained the first iteration of his “I Have A Dream” speech.

Throughout this week, WDET will take a look back at the 1963 march and look forward to this weekend’s commemoration. In this first segment, WDET’s Jerome Vaughn speaks with two members of the planning committee for Saturday’s march – the UAW’s Erica Hill and Kevin Tolbert.

Freedom Walk Detroit takes place Saturday at 9 a.m.
