Hamtramck officials have asked Governor Rick Snyder to appoint an emergency manager to fix the city’s finances and erase an estimated $3-million deficit. This will be the second time the state has taken over Hamtramck, which had an emergency manager for seven years at the start of the millennium. Since that crisis ended in 2007, the state has given emergency managers more power to cut spending and terminate expensive contracts. Hamtramck Mayor Karen Majewski tells WDET’s Pat Batcheller she doesn’t think this takeover will last as long. Click on the audio link above to hear the conversation.
