New Rules Take On Scrappers

June 6, 2013

“It’s not an urban issue, it’s also a rural issue.”

–State Representative Rashida Tlaib, D-Detroit

New restrictions on scrap metal dealers are designed to discourage thieves who steal copper and other metals from homes, farms, businesses, and even cars. Scrappers can make some money by selling the stolen metal, but State Representative Rashida Tlaib (D-Detroit) has co-sponsored legislation to crack down on illegal scrapping. WDET's Pat Batcheller asked Rep. Tlaib what the bill would do, and what penalties there would be for people who break the law. Click on the audio link above to hear the conversation.
