Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan has announced a community partnership to maintain nearly 250 city parks this summer.

The city will handle most of the maintenance itself but community and faith groups have so far pledged to adopt 65 additional parks.

Duggan says most parks in Detroit were not maintained last year.

“The conditions that our children have experienced in the parks … particularly last summer … were not acceptable. There were probably 25 parks in this city that were regularly maintained. The city has about 270 parks.”

Duggan says community groups are committing to mow the lawn once every two weeks or so and pick up trash in each adopted park.

He says the community maintenance partnership will run from May through October.
