The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office hosts a town-hall meeting next week about what it calls an “epidemic” of heroin use in the area.

Sheriff Michael Bouchard will speak at the event, along with members of the county’s Narcotics Enforcement Team and a doctor of emergency medicine.

Bouchard says he’s noticed a significant increase in cases involving heroin in the past two years.

“Our cases and our addiction and our problems … tremendously and exponentially rise. The year-to-date versus last year … just in Oakland County my Narcotics Enforcement Team cases on heroin are up 300 percent almost.”

Bouchard says presenters will discuss the drug’s prevalence in the area, its symptoms and what the county is doing to counter the epidemic.

The event is scheduled for next Wednesday -- April 16 -- at the Oakland County Board of Commissioners Auditorium in Pontiac.
