Last Chance for Michigan Taxpayers to Claim Millions in Tax Refunds from 2010

Friday, April 4, 2014

Taxpayers have until April 15 to file a return for 2010 since the statute of limitations expires after 36 months.

IRS Commissioner John Koskinen says hundreds of millions of dollars nationwide have not been claimed.

“In Michigan alone our estimate is that there’s about $24 million waiting for about 29 thousand people in Michigan who in effect paid taxes in 2010 in anticipation of filing … and then didn’t file.”

Koskinen says taxpayers will not be penalized for filing a return late, if they are owed money from 2010.

He says the unclaimed money will be turned over to the US Department of Treasury for good after April 15.
