Kym Worthy and 'Law and Order' Star Tackle Detroit's Backlog of Untested Rape Kits

Mariska Hargitay stars on “Law and Order: Special Victims Unit.” But she’s also the founder of the Joyful Heart Foundation, which advocates on behalf of sexual abuse victims.

Hargitay says rape kits collect critical evidence from sexual assault victims.

“Rape Kit evidence is probably the most powerful crime-solving tool that we have. Bottom line is rape kit can bring justice … and justice for so many survivors can bring healing.”

Prosecutor Worthy says 11,000 untested rape kits were found in an abandoned Detroit police warehouse in 2009.

She says her office has already tested around 1,600 of those kits and has convicted ten rapists using that evidence.
