Power Outage Causes 30 School Closures for DPS on West Side

Tuesday, February 11, 2014

Many Detroit Public Schools are closed due to a major power outage today.

DPS dismissed students from 30 schools on the city’s west side around 10 a.m.

Michelle Zdrodowski is the chief communications officer for DPS. She says tomorrow is the state-wide count day for public schools.

“The 30 schools on the west side of the city represent a very significant population … a very significant amount of our student population. So, you know, we are very concerned and we hope that power will be restored as soon as possible, and we can have school as planned tomorrow.”

Zdrodowski says calls have been made to the governor’s office in case schools are forced remain closed tomorrow.

She says DPS has experienced more than 130 days of school closures due to power outages in the first six months of this school year.
