Michigan Prisons in the Spotlight after Escape

The recent escape of a convicted murderer from a maximum security facility in Ionia has thrust the Michigan prison system into the public spotlight. Recent budget cuts…combined with a controversial privatization of kitchen services has invited scrutiny in the wake of the escape. Dan Heyns is the Director of the Michigan Department of Corrections. He tells WDET’s J. Carlisle Larsen that human error—not the system’s fiscal health—led to the escape of Michael Elliot.
