Detroit To Close 50 Parks In Spring

Friday, February 1, 2013

The City of Detroit will close 50 parks this spring. Detroit Mayor Dave Bing made the announcement during a news conference Friday morning. Bing says the park closures became necessary when City Council failed to approve a Belle Isle lease deal with the state.

“I made it public that I was in favor of this deal going forward. As I sit before you today, I am still in favor of that deal going forward. And I’m disappointed -- still disappointed that we had inaction on the deal that was on the table.”

The deal to lease Belle Isle to the state would have saved Detroit $6 million per year. In addition to the 50 park closures, the city says another 38 parks will have only limited services.
